City Ruggers Advance to Title Match

The Santa Fe Rugby Club qualified for the Southwest Rugby Union Division 3 championship match with a 38-17 home win Saturday against the Tucson Magpies. The Santos will square off with the Scottsdale Blues at 11:00 am today(Sunday) at the Municipal Recreation Complex. Scottsdale advanced by virtue of their 23-22 comeback win over Albuquerque’s Brujos Rugby Club.

The winners will represent the Southwest at the Pacific Regionals in Las Vegas, Nevada May 3-4.

In the third match of the day Tempe beat Red Mountain of Phoenix 38-24 to win Southwest Division 2 trophy outright. In the nightcap Albuquerque’s Atomic Sisters fell 48-19 to the Las Vegas Women in their Southwest title match.

Santa Fe tallied six five-point tries on the day. Aidan Gurule touched down twice and Dylan Merrigan, Willie Uhrle, Elijah Naranjo, and K.C. Martin pitched in one apiece. Milaan Van Wyk added three two-point conversion kicks and Cory Micander one.
